Has it always been your dream to own a small ranch in Montana, or maybe a private lakefront property in Nevada, or your own ski chalet in Colorado? With today's affordable real estate prices combined with amazingly low interest rates, your dream might be more obtainable than you think in Fremont. Before reaching for your checkbook, these are a few things one might consider before taking the plunge in Fremont.

1. The first thing I would recommend is determining what is truly important. If you are an avid water skier and find yourself spending the as much as a down payment in lake house rentals every year, maybe purchasing a lake house might make a little more sense. One thing you have to keep in mind though is you won't have the freedom or flexibility to move around. You better make sure to choose a location that you will want to return to season after season. Another thing to consider is renting home on the same lake for a few seasons to guarantee that your dream home still holds the same appeal after you buy.

2. The second thing to think about is what types of ties do you have to your current home? Do the kids come to visit on holidays? Many people never think about how having a "vacation" or second home will affect their routine?

3. Making a list of all areas that fit your criteria is a great way to begin to zeroing in on the perfect location for your home around Fremont. List taxes and utilities, available employment opportunities, your favorite sports and past times, and price range in Fremont. Try to get your list down your three favorites by doing some research and determining which areas are most compatible with your needs.

4. Contacting local government agencies and the chamber of commerce around Fremont and asking for as much information as they will send you can help to build a portfolio.

5. Now if this is not an area you have previously visited, try renting a place for a few weeks to get a feel for the place. Renting a home and immersing yourself in an area is going to be one of the best ways to really begin to start feeling like a part of the community.

6. Once you've planned your visit, contact me, Clyde Brown, and make appointments to tour some houses. Please send me a list of your criteria and a maximum price range and I will begin putting together a list of properties you might like to tour. You may find it helpful to take notes and pictures of your favorites as they will all start to blend together after awhile.
