Irvington is one of Fremont's historic commercial districts, with its center being the "Five Corners" intersection of Washington and Fremont Boulevards and Bay Street. The Irvington Redevelopment Project Area covers 473 acres in this district. As well as being a great place to find a home, the Irvington district is Fremont's largest shopping area, with everything from small locally-owned shops and restaurants to the mainstream shopping stores available.
The 473-acre Irvington Redevelopment Project Area is located in the central part of Fremont and is within one of the City's four historic commercial districts. The area was originally part of Mission San Jose but during the Gold Rush, the town of Irvington developed around the prominent intersection of the main road between Oakland and San Jose and the road between Mission San Jose and Warm Springs Landing. Today this intersection is known as the "Five Corners" intersection of Washington and Fremont Boulevards and Bay Street. The two-story brick building known as Clark Hall on the corner of Fremont Boulevard and Bay Street is the oldest documented commercial building in Fremont. It was erected in 1876.
Every Sunday the Irvington Farmers' Market brings the best of California-grown fruits and vegetables to Fremont. The market is located along Bay Street between Fremont Boulevard and Trimboli Way. Along with the Farmers' Market there are many exciting and diverse food restaurants to satisfy your every need.
Irvington is also home to Lake Elizabeth at Central Park. The park and recreation area was recently ranked by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the best urban outings in the Bay Area (March 5, 2009).
Lake Elizabeth is an 83 acre lake, on 450 acres of land, in the middle of Fremont. It's a great local recreational area, with plenty of amenities.
Lake activities include fishing and boating. You may rent paddle boats to take out on the lake and enjoy the surroundings.
There is a 2 mile path around the lake, perfect for walking, jogging, bike riding, or roller blading. An exercise course follows about 1 1/2 miles of that pathway, to aid in your fitness goals.
If you're looking for a spot to have a picnic or barbeque, Lake Elizabeth offers plenty of picnic sites. You can rent a sports bag which includes things like volleyball net, balls for various sports activities, and other sports essentials for your party to use during your event.
There are also tennis courts, basketball courts, softball fields, soccer fields, a skate park, a dog park, golf, snack bars, and playgrounds available. Amenities are plentiful, and generally well maintained.
Irvington High School is a California Distinguished School that is very well rounded between academics, sports, activities, and arts. It provides Interesting major projects each year that develop students, e.g., Quest, and the UN project. This is one of the very best high schools for performing arts. The theatre productions are amazing. The academic as well as the sports program at Irvington keeps the kids balanced and well rounded.
