Niles is another of Fremont's historic districts; Today Fremont's Niles is famous for its historic shopping district, Wildflower Festival, Niles Essanay Silent Film Festival and Museum, its annual Antique Fair, and the Niles Canyon Railway. As the Niles community continues to show off a captivating historic character, it still maintains a family atmosphere, and an inviting friendly shopping experience to everyone. Niles is the small town inside the big suburb. Located along Mission Blvd (old Highway 238) and tucked below the green foothills, the homes are both some of the oldest and some of the prettiest in Fremont.  It is also one of the best places to find antiques in the East Bay. Niles was Hollywood before there was a Hollywood.  It is the famous home of many of the Charlie Chapin and Bronco Billy films. Niles is proud of its history, and is a community within a community.

Niles made history in 1869 when the last tracks connecting the first transcontinental railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific were laid.  One of five towns incorporated in 1956 to form Fremont, Niles was the home of Essanay Motion Picture Studios between 1912 and 1916.  Hundreds of "Bronco Billy" westerns, and scores of silent movies starring Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, and Wallace Beery, were filmed in the streets of Niles.

The Niles Canyon Railway runs along Alameda Creek, and carries passengers on weekend excursions, including a holiday 'train of lights' which is extremely popular - tickets for these trains typically sell out by early October. The Niles Canyon Railroad has a small but well-maintained collection of historic rail stock.

Through the year the community of Niles host many family oriented events that are very popular through the Bay Area. Some of the events include...Charlie Chaplin Days, Spring Fever Car Show, Spring Sidewalk Sale, Niles Art Walk, Niles Main Street Wildflower Art and Garden Show, Niles Dog Show, Hot August Niles Car Show, The Niles Holiday Home Tour, and Festival of Lights Parade and Tree Lighting.
